The first speaker on the tape is New York Court of Appeals Judge and New York Law School Alumnus (class of 1913) Charles W. Froessel, then Chairman of the Law School's Board of Trustees, who introduces Justice Harlan. Justice Harlan begins speaking at approximately nine and a half minutes into the recording. The full recording is approximately 23 minutes long. Mayor Robert F. Wagner spoke at the ceremony as well but was not captured on this recording. Others in attendance were New York Court of Appeals Judges Adrian Burke, John Van Voorhis and Stanley Fuld; former New York Court of Appeals Judge Albert Conway; New York State Attorney General Louis Lefkowitz; and the presidents of all the New York bar associations. Judge Froessel read congratulatory messages from Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals Charles Desmond, Governor Nelson Rockefeller and President John F. Kennedy, who referred to Justice Harlan as a "most outstanding alumnus."
